Kaspersky Lab Predicts the End of the World for Advanced Persistent Threat (APTs) as We Know Them in 2016

Nigeria ranks number 8 for Internet Users by country.
It is the highest number among all African countries.

LAGOS, Nigeria, December 14, 2015/ -- Kaspersky Lab’s (www.Kaspersky.co.za) experts revealed their predictions for 2016, which are based on the expertise of the Global Research and Analysis Team - the company’s 43 top security experts, located all over the world. Each member contributed unique expertise and, in 2015 alone, their insight and intelligence resulted in detailed reports on 12 Advanced Persistent Threat actors (APTs), “speaking” different languages, including French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, English, among others.

Kaspersky Lab’s experts anticipate that in 2016 we will see significant evolution in cyberespionage tradecraft. First, there will be a dramatic change in how APTs are structured and operated. It is expected to see a decreased emphasis on ‘persistence’, with a greater focus on memory-resident or fileless malware, reducing the traces left on an infected system and thereby avoiding detection.

Furthermore, the experts see that there is less urge to demonstrate superior cyber-skills, so return on investment will rule much of the nation-state attacker’s decision-making. Therefore there will be an increase in the repurposing of off-the-shelf malware rather than investment in bootkits, rootkits and custom malware that gets burned by research teams.

In a more long-term perspective, there is an expectation that more newcomers will enter the APT space. Cyber-mercenaries will grow in number as more parties seek to gain from online attacks. These are expected to offer attack expertise to anyone willing to pay, and also to sell to interested third-parties digital access to high-profile victims, in what could be called an ‘Access-as-a-Service’ offering.

Consumer threats will also evolve. According to experts ransomware will be gaining more ground on banking Trojans and is expected to extend into new areas such as OS X devices, often owned by wealthier and therefore more lucrative targets in addition to mobile and the Internet-of-Things.

Cybercriminals are constantly looking for new ways to make their victims pay. Therefore, alternative payment systems such as ApplePay and AndroidPay, as well as stock exchanges are expected to become growing targets for financial cyber-attacks.

In 2015, Kasperksy Lab experts witnessed a rise in the number of DOXing, public shaming and extortion attacks, as everyone from Hactivists to nation-states embraced the strategic dumping of private pictures, information, customer lists, and code to shame their targets. Sadly, Kaspersky Lab expects this practice to continue to rise exponentially in 2016.

“Nigeria ranks number 8 for Internet Users by country*, it is the highest number among all African countries. It is obvious that in this region we will see many attacks on users aimed at getting their financial and personal data on mobiles and PCs. Ransomware will also likely rise in this region in 2016. Also there are more and more companies choosing to keep their data in the cloud due to the reduced costs and the grown Internet speed, so the opportunity for malware writers to steal company data has become a much bigger risk than a few years ago” says Dirk Kollberg, Senior Security Researcher, Global Research & Analysis Team at Kaspersky Lab.

In order to be able to minimise the future risks connected with cyber-attacks of the future, businesses should create and deploy a complete security strategy. It is important to educate staff about cybersecurity, implement multi-layered Endpoint protection with extra proactive layers and protect all elements of infrastructure, patch vulnerabilities, mind everything that is mobile and implement encryption for communication and sensitive data. Companies that have high risks of encountering cyberattacks should consider creating a dedicated Security Operations Center.

Individuals should invest in a robust security solution for all devices and switch to encrypted communication. However, they should not solely rely on technology. Studying the basics of cybersecurity and exploring options that come with the protective solution can save from many incidents. With more and more of our lives being exposed online – it might be useful to revise online habits, as once the information is uploaded it stays online forever and can be used against you or your company.

Consumers Digest Names 2014 Automotive Best Buys

DEERFIELD, Ill., Nov. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Thirty-seven vehicles and eight companion models received Best Buy ratings from Consumers Digest for the 2014 model year. The ratings, which are published in CD's December issue (on sale Nov. 1) and are available at ConsumersDigest.com, span 12 categories: Subcompacts, Compacts, Family Cars, Luxury Cars, Sporty Cars, Hybrids, Minivans, Compact SUVs, Midsize SUVs, Full-size SUVs, Luxury SUVs and Pickups. The Best Buys—based on behind-the-wheel driving experience, safety ratings, ownership costs, warranty, price, comfort, ergonomics and amenities—reflect CD's view of which 2014 vehicles offer exceptional all-around value for the money.

2014 Automotive Best Buys

3 "Subcompacts": Chevrolet Sonic, Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta
3 "Compacts": Ford Focus, Kia Soul, Mazda3
7 "Family Cars": Chevrolet Impala, Ford Fusion/Lincoln MKZ, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata/Kia Optima, Mazda6
4 "Luxury Cars": Audi A6, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, Chrysler 300
5 "Sporty Cars": Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Ford Mustang, Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ
3 "Hybrids": Ford Fusion Hybrid/Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, Toyota Prius
3 "Minivans": Chrysler Town & Country/Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey
4 "Compact SUVs": Chevrolet Equinox/GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5
3 "Midsize SUVs": Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Pathfinder
    5 "Full-size SUVs": Buick Enclave/Chevrolet Traverse/GMC Acadia, Dodge Durango, Mazda CX-9
3 "Luxury SUVs": Acura MDX, Acura RDX, Infiniti QX60
    2 "Pickups": Ford F-150 and Ram 1500

"Value, as we see it, is based on purchase price and ownership costs relative to quality, performance and subjective factors, such as comfort and design," says Randy Weber, CD's publisher.

Performance characteristics that were evaluated include starting and acceleration, shifting, steering and handling, braking, ride quality and fuel economy. Design factors that were considered include interior ergonomics, seating configuration and flexibility, accessories and amenities, fit and finish and cargo space.

Of note among CD's Best Buys for the 2014 model year, the automakers from Japan and Korea combined to garner a 10 percentage point increase in the number of Best Buys that their vehicles were awarded (18) over the number of 2013-model-year recommendations that their vehicles received. The 40 percent of 2014 CD Best Buys for the Asian automakers is the largest percentage for the group since its vehicles represented 42 percent of all Best Buys for the 2009 model year.

The percentage of Best Buys that were awarded to 2014 vehicles that were manufactured by U.S. automakers dipped to 53.3 percent from 60.5 percent for the 2013 model year.

Despite the slide by the Americans, vehicles that were made by General Motors received 10 Best Buys. Ford Motor vehicles received eight recommendations, and the Chrysler family of brands received seven.

Consumers Digest's Automotive Best Buys report includes invoice pricing, standard features and performance traits that support the models' Best Buy recommendation in the collective opinion of CD's veteran automotive editors: Dan Carney has reviewed vehicles for Motor Trend and Popular Mechanics, among others, and is a former president of Washington Automotive Press Association; Susan Carpenter has reviewed vehicles for the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register; Jim Gorzelany has served Consumers Digest readers for 27 years; Marlon Hanson is president of Texas Automotive Media Association; award-winning reporter Jim Mateja writes a weekly Chicago Tribune automotive column; Courtney Messenbaugh has written reviews for MotherProof.com and other websites.

Consumers Digest and ConsumersDigest.com are designed to inform and educate readers, so they can buy with confidence, no matter the product or service. The editorial team is committed to providing practical advice, factual evaluations and specific recommendations that lead consumers to exceptional values in today's complex marketplace. Like the December issue, ConsumersDigest.com includes the profiles of CD's Best Buy vehicles as well as other elements that assist in the car-shopping experience, not the least of which is the Complete Interactive New Car Guide. In the Guide, consumers will find: articles based on investigations of what automakers are doing to increase passenger and cargo space; the trade-offs of purchasing a hybrid or electric car versus cost of ownership; and the Ultimate Auto Showroom, which provides data on vehicle standard features, options, MSRPs, dealers' invoice pricing and warranties.

Consumer Confidence Decreases Sharply In October

NEW YORK, Oct. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® , which had declined moderately in September, decreased sharply in October. The Index now stands at 71.2 (1985=100), down from 80.2 in September. The Present Situation Index decreased to 70.7 from 73.5. The Expectations Index fell to 71.5 from 84.7 last month.
The monthly Consumer Confidence Survey® , based on a probability-design random sample, is conducted for The Conference Board by Nielsen, a leading global provider of information and analytics around what consumers buy and watch. The cutoff date for the preliminary results was October 17.
Says Lynn Franco, Director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board: "Consumer confidence deteriorated considerably as the federal government shutdown and debt-ceiling crisis took a particularly large toll on consumers' expectations. Similar declines in confidence were experienced during the payroll tax hike earlier this year, the fiscal cliff discussions in late 2012, and the government shutdown in 1995/1996. However, given the temporary nature of the current resolution, confidence is likely to remain volatile for the next several months."
Consumers' assessment of current conditions declined moderately. Those claiming business conditions are "good" decreased to 19.0 percent from 20.7 percent, however, those claiming business conditions are "bad" edged down to 23.0 percent from 23.9 percent. Consumers' appraisal of the job market was less favorable than last month. Those saying jobs are "plentiful" was virtually unchanged at 11.3 percent from 11.4 percent, while those saying jobs are "hard to get" increased to 35.8 percent from 33.6 percent.
Consumers' expectations, which had softened in September, decreased sharply in October. Those expecting business conditions to improve over the next six months fell to 16.0 percent from 20.6 percent, while those expecting business conditions to worsen increased to 17.5 percent from 10.3 percent.
Consumers' outlook for the labor market was also more pessimistic. Those anticipating more jobs in the months ahead decreased to 15.3 percent from 16.1 percent, while those anticipating fewer jobs increased to 22.7 percent from 19.1 percent. The proportion of consumers expecting their incomes to increase rose to 15.8 percent from 15.1 percent, however, those expecting a decrease rose to 15.4 percent from 13.9 percent.

Consumer Rights / New EU rules on consumer rights to enter into force
« on: April 25, 2013, 03:25:40 pm »
New EU rules on consumer rights to enter into force

The new EU Consumer Rights Directive has been formally adopted today by Member States in the EU's Council of Ministers. The new legislation will strengthen consumers' rights in all 27 EU countries, particularly when shopping online. After publication in the EU's Official Journal, governments will have two years to implement the rules at national level. Today's approval follows an overwhelming vote to back the rules by the European Parliament on 23 June 2011 (MEMO/11/450). The European Commission put forward the proposal in October 2008 (IP/08/1474). The final agreement between Parliament and Council on the Consumer Rights Directive was brokered by EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding in June this year.

Top 10 benefits for consumers in the new Directive:

1) The proposal will eliminate hidden charges and costs on the Internet

Consumers will be protected against "cost traps" on the Internet. This happens when fraudsters try to trick people into paying for ‘free’ services, such as horoscopes or recipes. From now on, consumers must explicitly confirm that they understand that they have to pay a price.

2) Increased price transparency

Traders have to disclose the total cost of the product or service, as well as any extra fees. Online shoppers will not have to pay charges or other costs if they were not properly informed before they place an order.

3) Banning pre-ticked boxes on websites

When shopping online – for instance buying a plane ticket – you may be offered additional options during the purchase process, such as travel insurance or car rental. These additional services may be offered through so-called ‘pre-ticked’ boxes. Consumers are currently often forced to untick those boxes if they do not want these extra services. With the new Directive, pre-ticked boxes will be banned across the European Union.

4) 14 Days to change your mind on a purchase

The period under which consumers can withdraw from a sales contract is extended to 14 calendar days (compared to seven days legally prescribed by EU law today). This means that consumers can return the goods for whatever reason if they change their minds.

Extra protection for lack of information: When a seller hasn’t clearly informed the customer about the withdrawal right, the return period will be extended to a year.

Consumers will also be protected and enjoy a right of withdrawal for solicited visits, such as when a trader called beforehand and pressed the consumer to agree to a visit. In addition, a distinction no longer needs to be made between solicited and unsolicited visits; circumvention of the rules will thus be prevented.

The right of withdrawal is extended to online auctions, such as eBay – though goods bought in auctions can only be returned when bought from a professional seller.

The withdrawal period will start from the moment the consumer receives the goods, rather than at the time of conclusion of the contract, which is currently the case. The rules will apply to internet, phone and mail order sales, as well as to sales outside shops, for example on the consumer's doorstep, in the street, at a Tupperware party or during an excursion organised by the trader.

5) Better refund rights

Traders must refund consumers for the product within 14 days of the withdrawal. This includes the costs of delivery. In general, the trader will bear the risk for any damage to goods during transportation, until the consumer takes possession of the goods

6) Introduction of an EU-wide model withdrawal form

Consumers will be provided with a model withdrawal form which they can (but are not obliged to) use if they change their mind and wish to withdraw from a contract concluded at a distance or at the doorstep. This will make it easier and faster to withdraw, wherever you have concluded a contract in the EU.

7) Eliminating surcharges for the use of credit cards and hotlines

Traders will not be able to charge consumers more for paying by credit card (or other means of payment) than what it actually costs the trader to offer such means of payment. Traders who operate telephone hotlines allowing the consumer to contact them in relation to the contract will not be able charge more than the basic telephone rate for the telephone calls.

8) Clearer information on who pays for returning goods

If traders want the consumer to bear the cost of returning goods after they change their mind, they have to clearly inform consumers about that beforehand, otherwise they have to pay for the return themselves. Traders must clearly give at least an estimate of the maximum costs of returning bulky goods bought by internet or mail order, such as a sofa, before the purchase, so consumers can make an informed choice before deciding from whom to buy.

9) Better consumer protection in relation to digital products

Information on digital content will also have to be clearer, including about its compatibility with hardware and software and the application of any technical protection measures, for example limiting the right for the consumers to make copies of the content.

Consumers will have a right to withdraw from purchases of digital content, such as music or video downloads, but only up until the moment the actual downloading process begins.

10) Common rules for businesses will make it easier for them to trade all over Europe.

These include:

A single set of core rules for distance contracts (sales by phone, post or internet) and off-premises contracts (sales away from a company’s premises, such as in the street or the doorstep) in the European Union, creating a level playing field and reducing transaction costs for cross-border traders, especially for sales by internet.

    Standard forms will make life easier for businesses: a form to comply with the information requirements on the right of withdrawal;

Specific rules will apply to small businesses and craftsmen, such as a plumber. There will be no right of withdrawal for urgent repairs and maintenance work. Member States may also decide to exempt traders who are requested by consumers to carry out repair and maintenance work in their home of a value below €200 from some of the information requirements.

About Us / Why the Nigerian Consumers Opinion Forum?
« on: April 25, 2013, 09:36:06 am »

The Nigerian Consumers Opinion Forum is an open public information discussion forum on the internet to rate companies, brands, products and services in Nigeria, the biggest and largest market for consumers in Africa and among the major markets in the world.

It has become important and necessary to start the Nigerian Consumers Opinion Forum, because we have noticed the widespread ignorance of consumers on the general distribution and consumption of goods and services in Nigeria where many fake drugs, foods and products are openly sold on the streets and markets without the approval of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and often not noticed by the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) of Nigeria, because consumers are not informed on their rights and not educated to alert and report to NAFDAC and CPC whenever they have complaints about bad products and services.

The Nigerian Consumers Opinion Forum like similar consumer advocacy groups in the world will engage in active community mobilization and sensitization of consumers online and offline to protect consumers from the following:

Corporate abuse
Unsafe products and services
Predatory lending
False advertising
Astroturfing and
Pollution.

Nigerian Consumers Opinion Forum will use Opinion Polls and Surveys for findings and ratings on products and services in Nigeria; disseminating market information, and prohibiting specific acts or practices, or by promoting competitive forces in the markets which directly or indirectly affect consumers (such as transport, electricity, communications, etc.)

We shall act as public whistle blowers and watchdogs for the consumers in Nigeria to enforce consumer rights.

The right to Satisfaction of Basic Needs.
Access to basic goods and services necessary for survival, such as food, water, energy, clothing, shelter, health-care, education and sanitation.
Goods and services must meet the standard of quality promised such that there is value for money in the purchase.

The Right to Safety
Protection from hazardous products, production processes and services.

The Right to Information
Provision of information enabling informed consumer choice as well as protection from misleading or inaccurate advertising and labeling.

The Right to Choose
Access to variety of quality products and services at competitive prices.

The Right to Redress
Compensation for misrepresentation, shoddy goods and unsatisfactory public and private services, including the right to adequate legal representation.

The Right to Consumer Education
Acquisition of the skills required to be an informed consumer throughout life.

The Right to Consumer Representation
Advocacy of consumers' interest and the ability to take part in the formulation of economic and other policies affecting consumers i.e. the right to be heard.

The Right to a Healthy Environment
Habitation is a place that is safe for present and future generations and which will enhance the quality of their lives.

Please, note that the Nigerian Consumers Opinion Forum is not an NGO or a private company, but a free public opinion forum that will function from a general website where consumers will express themselves and post their comments or opinions on their experiences and observations of the numerous and various products and services given or sold to them in Nigeria.

We look forward to the cooperation and support of all consumers, producers, manufacturers, distributors, advertisers marketers, promoters and all those in Nigeria and abroad who care about the safety, security and welfare of Nigerian consumers.
